Top off your visit to Prague with a magical form of entertainment that is popular throughout Czech Republic. Modern black light performances combine elements of dance, mime, magic and theater, allowing viewers to experience supernatural worlds without words.
History of Black Light Theater
The concept behind black light theater originated in China during the 18th century, when the use of candlelight was first used to perform silhouette shows through white cloth screens.
With the invention of the ultraviolet lamp in the late 1960’s, simple silhouette shows grew and matured into the modern black light performances that are popular in the Czech Republic today.
Prague's black light shows capitalize on the inability of the human eye to distinguish black on black, allowing artists to create optical illusions that leave the viewer entranced.
Where to go
Currently, there are nine black light theatres in Prague. One of the most reputable and authentic theaters is Ta Fantastika Prague Theater, located in the heart of Stare Mesto (Old Town).
Ta Fantastika offers daily shows of Aspects of Alice; a show based on Antoine de Exupery’s written work, Little Prince. Classical music plays in the background throughout this metaphorical story of love, responsibility, approaches to life and interpersonal relationships.
While many black light shows are suitable for all ages, some, like Aspects of Alice, do contain brief periods of nudity.
Once the show begins, the theater will become completely dark, so it is best to wait until intermission -- about 45 minutes into the show -- for any refreshment runs.
With the current exchange rate, tickets for Aspects of Alice are $34 US dollars. If you are a student, you can snag a ticket at the discounted student price of $25. Limited view perimeter seating is available for $17.
HelloMetro Tip: If possible, avoid sitting in the first 5 rows. Being so close to the stage can give away the secrets behind the optical illusions.
